Nathan’s Lectures

  • Amnesia

Follow along with G. K. Chesterton as you revive a wonder for ordinary things. God made the world beautiful and strange, but you and I grow accustomed to its beauty and forget. For one hour, remember that sense of surprise that first captured you as a child. In the process, you remember who you are.

  • Bioethics

Germany and Russia were not the only ones to harm their citizens in the name of “progress” and “science.” This talk casts light on the American origins of Nazi Eugenics and jumps from there to provide tangible, Biblical principles for making decisions regarding life. It is a tough talk, but it is worth it.

  • Evolution

If you say, “I don’t believe in gravity,” everyone will think you are ignorant. If you say, “I don’t believe in evolution,” people freak out. Why is there such an emotional difference between those two statements? In this lecture, you’ll use the Scriptures to understand why some people are so emotionally attached to evolution, far more than other scientific theories.

  • Mormonism

How better to learn about Mormonism than from a Mormon? In this lecture a role play is used to give you a taste of what it is like to talk to Mormons. Then, you’ll learn the differences between Christianity and Mormonism and you’ll get some practical tips for talking with nonChristians, regardless of their background.

  • The Pursuit of Joy

We cannot help but seek joy and contentment. Even though we know that joy comes from God, it does not make it easier to access His joy. How do we live a life of joy while we suffer in this life?

  • Skin Deep

Be prepared for controversy as you consider what culture has taught you about beauty in all of its dysfunction. The culture firmly believes that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but is it? Is beauty really all that important? Find out what God thinks about beauty.

  • TechnoBable

What does the Bible have to say about technology? More than you think. In this lecture, you’ll examine the Tower of Babel story (Genesis 11) to build a Biblical understanding of technology. Then, you’ll contemplate how to apply those principles to your life.

  • Identity

We all struggle with insecurity, with feeling like our value and worth are dependent upon something we are or something that we do. We know that our identity comes from Jesus, but what does it mean to receive identity from Christ?

  • Intro to Worldviews

What is a worldview? This lecture invites the audience to consider that everyone has a worldview, that all truth is God's truth, and the reality that all aspects of reality are sacred, not just some "religious" actions.

  • Night at the Movies

Our lives are composed of stories, so other stories give us a mirror by which to make sense of our own. Movies help us remember that the particular events of our lives drive towards a conclusion and that God has uses for the parts of ourselves that do not seem to fit.

  • New Age

While examining the New Age worldview, we explore how to talk with others with whom you disagree. As Lewis says regarding "True Myth," no one's beliefs are completely devoid of truth, and the truth you find in what the other says can build a bridge towards exploring truth together.

  • Leisure

While our lives often seem centered around work, the Biblical narrative shows created reality moving from rest to rest. We explore rest and how we can practice it in our busy lives. This includes a rest practicum.

  • Christianity and Mental Health (3 - 80 minute Lecture Series)

This lecture series introduces a Biblical understanding of mental health, defining many terms and wrestling with several of the most significant challenges that mental health issues bring. The first lecture introduces mental health and explores how our identity issues interact with our mental health (this includes the lecture, "Identity"). The second lecture explores how mental health is related to emotions, sin and forgiveness, suffering and lament, and biopsychosocial damage. This includes a brief summary of each of the main mental health challenges that are commonly diagnosed today. The third lecture applies the Biblical principles from the first two lectures to our own experiences with mental health challenges. Although each lecture is currently 80 minutes, they could be modified to fit 60 minute sessions.
